Chapter Fifteen

Evan met Libby and me at the inn after the dancers went to the theater that evening. The performance began at eight, and they’d packed up after a round of showers and a light dinner they’d ordered in. The home was peaceful and quiet in their absence. Exactly what we needed for our discussion.

I left the door to my living quarters open several inches so I could listen for anyone returning unexpectedly. Then I set a tray with sweets and tea service on my table, where Evan and his sister were already lost in speculation on the intent and meaning of today’s threat.

Cindy Lou Who curled near the fireplace, eyes drowsy and expression content.

“I don’t like it,” he said, scrubbing a hand over the top of his head. “I can’t believe you’re both being followed. I don’t know where to start to fix this. Who’s in the most immediate danger? I have no way to know how to divide my time and resources.”

“What?” I asked, settling in to join them.

Libby poured a cup of tea and blew across the top, dissipating the steam. “Evan thinks the message on your truck window might’ve been for me. Assuming I was right to worry about the teal sedan and greeting cards.”

My gaze flicked to Evan. Libby and I had just discussed that possibility and decided she was overreacting. Why was he reigniting this flame?

Unless he’d heard something from Boston PD and knew more than he was saying.

“Evan?” I asked.

“It wasn’t a rat,” he said, looking as if he might combust. “The message was vague. And the two of you were together. It makes more sense that the message was for Libby than for the killer to suddenly change up their lazy leave-a-rat MO and write a note. That took time.”

I set a hand on Libby’s shoulder, to comfort her, and furrowed my brows at the sheriff. I willed him to be overthinking instead of right. I much preferred the idea I was the target, but what he said made sense.

My heart sank for him. Now he had two dangerous individuals to find in Mistletoe, a town currently bursting at its seams with people. And a murder to solve.

Libby patted my hand on her shoulder, attention fixed on her brother. “I think I saw the car again today at the Cap and Kerchief. I was watching it when Holly found me and took me shopping.”

Evan pressed his lips into a thin line and swung his gaze to me. “What were you doing at a hotel on the edge of town?”

“Delivering holiday cards from the farm.” I dropped my hand away from Libby and glared. “Why? What do you think I was doing at a hotel on the edge of town?”

He blinked. “Interrogating some new lead. Maybe a member of the ballet’s stage crew.”

“The ballet’s crew is staying there?” I asked, my thoughts running amuck all over again. I looked to Libby.

“The sound and lighting team,” he said.

“So, it’s possible the car you’ve been seeing is related to the ballet.
